SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME

CONFIDENCE BUILDING

At times, most of us have felt less confident than we would wish. Sometimes it’s the type of situation that makes us uncomfortable (public speaking or an interview, for example), and sometimes it may be people with whom we don’t feel at ease ( the boss, very loud people). Many of us find ways of overcoming our “nerves”, or we can choose to avoid those situations, and people, without having a negative impact on the overall quality of our lives.
Some people, such as those who have had mental health problems, may experience a lack of confidence in a greater number of situations. They need more ideas and support to find ways of dealing with their own feelings, and ways of being able to cope in situations with which they don’t feel comfortable.
This course is designed to create a safe environment in which participants can explore different techniques and ideas that they may find helpful for their future development. It will examine the role of volunteering in nurturing self confidence, and creating new friendships. The course will enable participants to leave the course with personal development plans for improving their confidence and self esteem.
The trainer, Claire Greenwood, is a fellow of the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning. After studying Psychology Claire has taken on a number of varied roles in the public and not for profit sector. She was Head of Training and Development for Mencap for 10 years and now runs her own training business and Management Consultancy.

Find out how your organisation can benefit from including volunteers with mental health needs
Some people, such as those who have had mental health problems, may experience a lack of confidence in a number of situations. They may need additional support to find ways of ensuring that their volunteering contribution to your organisation is worthwhile and that they feel valued.
This three stranded course is designed to show you and your organisation how to overcome the possible concerns these volunteers may raise, by giving you an insight into the type of issues that they face and then the strategies you will need to help them overcome these issues. The course also aims to highlight the benefits of these volunteers to your organisation and will show you how you can make them feel that they are a valuable part of your team. Finally, a volunteer with recent experience of mental health issues will talk about his personal experience of volunteering and the benefits he has gained.
Nicola Petch is an Occupational Therapist with the South Glos Vocational Service, a specialist NHS service which supports people of working age with mental health needs in South Gloucestershire to access work, training and study opportunities.
Ben Hall is Project Co-ordinator for BTCV Forest of Avon Tree Life Centre in Kingswood and manages and supports volunteers with mental health needs.
Sam Fletcher is a peer support worker for the Early Intervention Team for Psychosis who is now supporting young people to overcome issues linked to having experienced psychosis and helping them to rebuild their lives in terms of getting involved in activities and volunteering.

Through a range of practical exercises and discussions, participants will understand the principles of conducting an effective interview which is comfortable for all parties and purposes. We will explore how those same techniques can be applied in a range of situations.
